Decorating with Pictures 2013

I’m so excited to announce my Decorating with Pictures series for the month of February, and my fabulous contributors line up! For those new around here, I am VERY passionate about decorating my home with family pictures and I like to encourage others to do the same. I feel strongly that our children notice those pictures of love and family unity, and it will plant in them a strong message of being a team, as well as building their self confidence.

Here is s shot of my family in the entry way of my home using vintage windows:

You can see how I did this and more pictures on the full post, How to turn Vintage Windows into Picture Frames. My children often stop to look at the pictures inside of these window panes, and they see it each time they come down the stairs. It’s a variety of playful images that are relaxed and fun.

In my office, I turned an outdated canvas art frame into this Repurposed Giant Frame (click for tutorial) and it’s BIG in my face as I tap away on my computer reminding me what is most important.

As a photographer, it pains me when I take pictures for families, and they stay hidden on a disc.  For a long time, I didn’t offer the digital images because I wanted so badly to make sure there are wall prints in my clients hands.  It doesn’t have to be professional portraits, it can be instagram pictures, just get them up on the walls or out on your end tables.

I’m going to quote myself from a previous post, “Though your children may not notice those images enough to mention every day, it is tucked in the back of their minds, and they feel the security that they are in a loving family. The secret to raising loving, creative, honest, self-confident kids is to nurture their self- esteem. How better to nurture that self-esteem than to decorate your home with THEM! Not just in family spaces, but each room of the home, have a little something. In the children’s bedroom, by placing pictures of your child being loved next to their bed will be “the last thing before they sleep and the first thing they see when they awaken.” Images speak louder than words.”

And moms—make sure YOU are in some of those images! Your children NEED to see you loving and squeezing and adoring them. They need to see that family portrait engrained in their memories as they pass through the revolving front door every day because they DO notice. We love to look at our children (and so do they) but they also need to look at you. Don’t worry about the fact that you still need to lose that last 15 pounds, your children love you for you, and you need to be remembered at this time in their lives.

I used to worry that people would come to my home and see family pictures everywhere and think I’m vain for displaying so many prints of my family. Well guess what? I love my family more than anything and its true—I think we are AWESOME and I love to look at us! I much prefer my family to black ironwork wall hangings. When I go to friends or strangers home, my favorite thing is to walk all around their home and silently peer into their frames, have a glimpse into their lives.

So for the next 28 days, I’m turning my blog over to my amazing contributors to share how they decorate their homes with  pictures. On March 1st, I will share a space in my home that I’m working on, PLUS a link party for everyone out there in blogland to share how you have decorated your home with family pictures. So if you’ve been planning on doing something with those pictures you took last year, here is a chance to be inspired!  The best way to see the daily posts is to subscribe via email so that they come in your inbox each day. (You can also click on SUBSCRIBE by my smiling face on the sidebar).

I’ve had some amazing contributors the past two times I’ve held the series, and I wanted to continue with having unique names and faces. SO FAR, I haven’t had anyone twice in the series (though I’ve featured a few at other times on my site), maybe next year I’ll ask back my favorites to share a new space;) I’ve got creative contributers from home bloggers to photographers to crafters, and we will be treated with all sorts of eye candy around their homes. Eeeeks, I’m so excited!

  13. During my training as a foster parent, we were encouraged to get pictures up of our new foster children as soon as possible. It truly helps them to feel like they are a part of the family. I found your blog through Becky HIggins facebook post and I am excited to see all of your ideas this month!

  14. I love love love this project and look forward to following it. I grew up in a family of (very) amateur photographers. My grandfather, father and myself were self-appointed photographers from each generation. We always had cameras around and were very accustomed for formal and informal portraits of family. That said, I grew up in a house devoid of framed photos. We’d joke about it with my mom – she’d have boxes full of prints and negatives, but none of them made it into photo albums, let alone onto our walls. And you know what? I still felt loved, supported, encouraged. So, while I do believe it’s wonderful to have family photos hanging up in our homes, I do not think it’s any indicator of whether children growing up knowing they’re surrounded by people who love them.

I completely agree;) Showing love is so much more than pictures. I think we all look for ways that we can show it even more than our love and hugs!!

  15. Kristen, thanks so much for doing this series again. I loved it last time. We’re staying in our house a bit longer than we expected and I need to freshen up the walls and update. I’m also a photographer and feel like I need to be a good example for my clients.

Do you have anyone showcasing their kitchen walls? I desperately need something for my kitchen. Ora the only big wall and its behind the table and the first thing you see when you walk in, so I feel like it needs to be clean, yet cool. We don’t have a ton of wall space, so if like go incorporate pictures.

    • Kristen Duke says:

I actually don’t know what everyone is sharing, but I do know there were a few who did kitchen walls in the past, so look through the old posts.

  24. What a great blog post. With digital photography so many beautiful photographs remain undeveloped and just in a hard drive or memory card somewhere. I love your decorating with pictures ideas. Beautiful site you have Kristen.
