Creamy Jalapeno Ranch Dip

There is this Tex-Mex restaurant just down the road from me called Chuys that introduced me to this creamy jalapeno ranch dip  10 years ago. Everyone raves about it, says they could swim in it or have it drenched over their heads and they’d be happy. I tend to agree. They serve it with their chips and salsa (but only if you ask). They also serve it as a dressing for their salads.  I came across a recipe at one point, but I changed it around a bit and added the limes.

If you see the word “jalapeno” and want to turn away–DON’T! I do not like jalapeno’s by themselves. I don’t put them on anything, in fact when I was making this, the idea of pickled jalapeno’s made my stomach turn just a bit as a spooned them out of the jar. But I pressed forward because I knew the end result was pure delicious-ness.

Creamy Jalapeno Ranch Dip
Cuisine: Tex Mex
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 10
This delicious dip is great for chips or as a salad dressing
  • ½ cup mayo
  • 16 oz. sour cream
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup tomatilla salsa
  • 1 small handful cilantro
  • 5 T Ranch dressing mix (or 1.5 packets)
  • ⅓ cups pickled jalapeños
  • 1 squeezed lime juice
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl
  2. In a large blender or food processor, pulse til smooth
  3. Refrigerate 30 minutes serve with tortilla chips.
  4. This dip can continue to be refrigerated, covered, for about a week. If you want it more runny for a dressing, add more lime juice

Here is a close up of the two unique ingredients that you likely won’t have at home and may be searching for at the store:

pickled jalapenos

The jalapeno’s give a bit of a kick to the ranch, but not too much. I don’t care for too much spice in my food.

  1. Sounds like a great recipe! In the ingredients, you list 5 Ranch dressing mix. Is that 5 tablespoons?

  20. This sounds awesome Kristen! YUM!

  21. This sounds and looks like a dip for chips that is served at Santa Fe Flats, a small, privately owned Tex Mex restaurant in north Houston. We love this dip and now livein Oklahoma City where, shall we say, there aren’tasmany good Tex Mex cchoices available. So, I will be adding this to my list of homemade Tex Mex dishes. Thank you.

  22. I’ve had chuys dip, loved it and will be trying this today. I don’t usually eat any mayonnaise products and was flabbergasted when the waiter said it contained mayonnaise.

  23. Question: if I’m using the ranch dressing instead of the ranch dressing mix, which ingredients should I keep out from the recipe? I live in Italy (and I was introduced to creamy jalapeno dip when I lived in Houston! :) ), and I can’t find the ranch mix…but I got some bottles of the dressing…
Please, let me know…I’m planning on making this in 2 days! :)

  24. My co-workers and I go to Chuy’s about 2-3 times per month. We always ask for multiple bowls of the “crack sauce” as it’s been nicknamed. I’ve never tasted anything close to it outside of the restuarant, but I made this last weekend and it was exactly the same if not better. It’s probably not good for me to have this recipe, but I am so glad I do. LOVE IT, Thank you so much!!!

  25. What grocery store carries the tomatillo salsa?

  26. Just made this for a Christmas party I am attending tonight and it tastes amazing. The only issue is that it is a bit runny for a dip. I did double the recipe but did not change anything else. Does this “firm” up after refrigeration?

  27. Stacie A. says:

I made this today and I was impressed with how close it is to the original. I am a creamy jalapeño fanatic and actually had some in my fridge to do a side by side comparison. This recipe was a little thick and not as intense of a flavor (the ranch was too strong in my opinion) so I added more buttermilk to thin it, a couple tablespoons more of salsa and jalapeños and added two cloves of garlic. Now it is just right! Thanks for the awesome recipe!

  28. Is this really 5 Tablespoons, not teaspoons?

  29. Must not stare at this too long or my stomach will start growling. Looks delicious. Pinning (and drooling!)
