Cooking with Kids

If you are like me, you know it’s a great idea to include the kids when cooking in the kitchen, but sometimes it’s not as easy in practice. I love the dream-like visions in my head that we are all laughing and having fun, but sometimes it can be stressful! I’ve done it enough that I thought I’d offer up a few tips. World Market asked me to check out their Easter and Spring items, and I was compensated with gift cards to shop for items, but all opinions are my own;)

Cooking with Kids

Tip #1 Let the kids be a part of picking out the treat or meal

I took my daughter shopping at World Market, and we found Easter decor and all sorts of fun stuff. She really liked this Daisy sandwich cookie kit (with pink frosting, of course), so we  picked it up along with a few other items. Sometimes I’ll pick out the treat, and that works, too. But having her a part of the process in picking it out is that much more fun for her.

In the store, we found a bunch of other adorable items to use in our baking, and just to spruce up the kitchen dishes. Look at these adorable dishes!!! Blue, yellow, or green? Or one of each? The handled batter bowls? Yes! Mini polka dot casserole dishes? Yes!

Tip #2 If you’ve got more than one child, make sure they know from the beginning that they are taking turns with the process steps

My girls were both very excited to help out, but from past experience, I know that tears will flow if they don’t know the expectations from the start.

Tip #3 Just plan on the kitchen being a big mess and don’t stress about it!

Does the thought of rolling out dough, sprinkling flour, and pieces of cooking falling all over the floor stop you from making delicious cut out cookies? Yeah, me too. I don’t often do this, but they were so excited, I had to take a deep breath and be ok with the mess that I knew was coming!  I love watching their faces as they study the process, and had fun with each step. The cookie kit had the flower cookie cutter, powder or the dough and frosting, we just needed to add our own butter, egg, and oil.

Tip #4 It doesn’t have to be perfect

My girls haven’t done a lot with cutting out cookies, and some of them weren’t the perfect shape. There were moments I wanted to re-do some of them, but I had to just let it go.

Cookies

Tip #5  Let them use their creative-ness

My girls found the cutest sprinkles at World Market, and though they might not have “fit” with these cookies as well, we included them, and they loved it! Sprinkles always add a bit more fun.
