Story from Alayna, my sis in law

Kristen has a lot of amazing qualities.  One of them can be that she is very direct, some might say blunt.
My first experience with her, let’s call it “straight-shooting,” came very early in our relationship.  Her brother and I had not been dating exclusively for very long when she moved to BYU and in the same apartment complex as him.  From what Ryan told me, Kristen had expressed excited approval when hearing some things about me.   After we met and spent some time together (in all honesty I was with her brother a lot) I got the feeling she wasn’t thrilled with me.  So I sort of jokingly said (some version of) she must be feeling like I was stealing her brother away.  This is my memory of the rest of the conversation:
Kristen:   Yes I do (accompanied by a frank stare).
Me:   . . . Uhmmm. . . Ok then.  See you . . .later?
Now it may not have played out exactly that way, but Kristen’s response was essentially in that tone.   She got over it, and we are great now, except for my general social-media-phobia that tends to offend a blogging queen such as herself.   This post is supposed to be about embarrassing moments for Kristen, but it feels like peeling of my own skin to write it.  I don’t think I would ever have guts to request this of other people, but Kristen is brave.  Maybe the bluntness stems from that boldness.  She is not afraid to say what she thinks and get on with it, while many of us would still be hemming and hawing and trying to squirm around the point.   So yes, the directness can be a very good thing, on the other hand . . . have you heard of the term blunt-force trauma?  ;)
I love Kristen.  She is one of my role-models for motherhood, creativity, and joy.  I feel very blessed and grateful that she is my sister-in-law and friend.  She is the epitome of the saying, “Ask an honest question, get an honest answer.”  Kristen, though, doesn’t usually even need the question.

  1. I LOVE it! Those are my favorite type of people….the ones who say what they mean and you don’t have to second guess or wonder where you stand with them. I KNEW there was a reason I liked reading along so much Kristen!

  3. Honestly that is one thing that I admire about you Kristen. I feel like I can ask you a question and you’ll actually give me an honest answer. I also feel like I can be honest with you and you’ve got tough enough skin to take it. I admire you!

  4. Ths was hilarious I’m so glad to know I’m not the only bluntly direct person out there. Sigh
